Hi Xanga!

Thursday, June 04, 2009

Today I start my weekend of staffing HOBY Illinois Central-South Leadership Seminar. I was a student ambassador ten years ago! I'm wearing my shirt from '99 today. : )

Joel will be going to Ben's seminary graduation this weekend and will get some quality time with his family in Chicagoland before coming home with me. Friday and Saturday we won't see each other. I'm fairly certain that we've seen each other at least briefly every day since I returned from California in March. We'll survive though. July promises to be rough though because I'll be in DC about 12 days.

Memorial Day weekend we went canoeing with some ChE people including three of my labmates. It was fun but extremely challenging. We did the 13 mile trip. Joel and I hit a tree and flipped over around mile 3. The boat tried to pull me under, and I was very panicky. I am afraid of dying by drowning. Joel rescued me and held me tightly until I could compose myself. I went and reclaimed my flipflops and our snacks but lost our water jug. Joel and some other boys worked for about ten minutes to free our boat and get Joel's shoes and lifejacket out of the tree. They were all scratched up as none of them were wearing shirts or lifejackets. Looked painful. Later Joel ran us into a log, and I fell forward suddenly and bruised my shin. I wasn't the happiest, but I know it was not really meant to cause me pain. He made up for it by paddling a good portion of the final two miles by himself. My lower back hurt really badly so it was difficult for me to sit up and paddle. We got to the end, and we were so excited. But unfortunately, we couldn't get our boat steered to the shore early enough to make the dock. We were headed for the bridge that we weren't allowed to pass. So we hopped out. We weren't expecting it to be so difficult to keep the canoe from continuing down river. It was so heavy and ended up capsizing, and the rocks underneath did not provide good traction with bare feet. We both ended up very scraped, and I lost a flip flop. Joel graciously gave me his shoes. He had more in his car. We were so exhausted we could hardly move or think afterwards. It was our 3 month anniversary, so we went out for dinner anyway. Sunday we were horribly sore. Sunday night I threw up all night. Monday he came over to bring me sick people food but then he laid in my floor with a fever. We hosted a games night that we managed to be lively for. As soon as people left, we both felt terrible again. The rest of the week, one of us was throwing up or feverish. Damn river water.

Now we're well and going to Oklahoma on vacation. Monday we're leaving here early in the morning. We're spending the day playing at the City Museum in St. Louis. Joel adores playgrounds, and the City Museum is playground paradise for all ages. He's so excited. He thinks it just might be the best day of his life. In the evening we're flying to OKC. He's very pumped to look out the window of the plane (he hasn't flown much). We're staying in OKC and then Tuesday we plan to go to White Water or Frontier City depending on the weather. Then we head to Snyder. I told my mom to try to have a slumber party with Haley's girls that night. Wednesday and Thursday we'll be in Snyder with probably an excursion to the Wildlife Refuge and a dinner party with my closest 30 relatives. Friday we're heading to Norman to explore and to see Julie. Friday evening is Mandy's rehearsal and dinner. We might also go out to Bricktown. Saturday is Mandy and Eric's wedding. My mom and grandma and Aunt Debbie will be at the wedding, and both Johnelle and I are in the bridal party. After the wedding, we'll go back to Snyder to be at First Baptist Church Sunday morning. Sunday night we're staying at Julie's and then flying back to IL on Monday morning so we can get back in time for Joel to start summer school that day. I'm sooooo excited to go to Oklahoma!

Update

Just a quick update.
  • I get to see polymer microspheres fabricated for the first time today. It's the experimental system that my thesis work models.
  • The ChBE Alumni Symposium was pretty cool or at least the Sat. night banquet. I enjoyed Prof. Hammack's web 2.0 talk and the ensuing discussion with the older generations. Chancellor Herman was also enjoyable, and he gave me a date idea for October (Joel loves the Morrill Act, and the original document will be on display in our campus art museum for homecoming this year). I also had a WWII vet at my table who thought he was a psychic. Profs. Higdon, Kraft, and Kong were also entertaining to sit with.
  • I loved the visit to Joel's home for Easter. We had a great time, and I really like his family. His brother-in-law and sister hugged me immediately when they arrived. It was sweet. We also got several fun board games to take back to my place to play (sequence and chess).
  • We've booked plane tickets to go to Oklahoma for a week in June for Mandy's wedding and to see my family. Should be an amazing trip! Joel looks up OK stuff all the time. He's really pumped.
  • I haven't posted much lately because 1) my life has been really busy and full and 2) I would mostly just talk about Joel since he constitutes a major portion of my life now. I do still have my own life and activities, but he's becoming part of those things, too (he loves the APO friends!).
  • For those interested, Joel and I have been dating 10 weeks now. We're very committed to each other, and we're in this for the long haul. You can see the "sickeningly sweet" pictures of us on facebook (those were Minh-Bao's words).

The First Month

Joel and I started dating a month ago. We've only not seen each other 3 of the past 30 days. I leave for Santa Barbara on Wednesday and don't come back til Saturday. Since he's at my place much more than his, he even offered to stay there while I'm in California. Goofy boy. I'll keep him though. Yesterday he bought me a single red rose and compact fluorescent lightbulbs. He's got me pegged. This weekend we spanned a very wide range of topics from High School Musical on Ice (which we both LOVED! Elizabeth got us front row seats, and we sang along to almost all the lip-synched songs) to people who should have better hygiene (it's called Speedstick, it's not expensive) to what kind of house we want to live in to strategy for the Polar Dare board game to names for our future children (jokingly he says he wants 22 so we can be on TLC and also hire grad assistants to study the kids for psychological experiments and so we can form our own Segue polo team). We might have too much fun, but I like it. More importantly, I really like him!

Satisfaction/Contentment

I just wanted to share briefly that I think Joel & I are awesome! We've had so much fun talking, laughing, trying to be more Brazilian, baking cookies, holding hands when we pray, reading, singing, distracting each other, dancing in my apt, eating muffins from Perkins in the middle of the night, and going on adventures. Upcoming funness: the library, kite flying, West Side Story, maybe St. Patrick's Day parade, imbibing, High School Musical on Ice, and going home with him for Easter. Probably should start getting more sleep too. I am happy. : )
